The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was formed in 1971 through the federation of seven emirates and is governed by a Supreme Council, made up of the rulers of each emirate - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain. The President of the UAE is Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Vice President and prime minister is Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.
Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1950s, the UAE's economy was dependent on fishing and its declining pearling industry. Abu Dhabi became the first emirate to export oil in 1962, and through this, dramatically transformed the country's society and economy.
The late Sheikh Zayed, ruler of Abu Dhabi, founder and First President of the UAE, was a visionary and generous leader. He directed the lucrative oil revenues into healthcare, education and the national infrastructure, positively advancing all of the emirates.
The country's thriving business sector and tourist industry have helped to fuel a construction boom, with billions of dollars being pumped into the modern infrastructure and showpiece schemes. Through this, the UAE has attracted a large number of expatriates who enjoy a high standard of living in this modern, cosmopolitan, and exciting country.
